Geoff Edwards, chair of the organising committee, reports.
Liverpool’s newly-refurbished Guild of Students was the venue for the 2016 AGM and Members’ Weekend and quite an event it was too. JD Wetherspoon’s charismatic boss, Tim Martin gave a keynote address in which we learnt Wetherspoon’s policy on opening and closing pubs and he delivered a passionate defence of our democracy and the implied threat to our very existence from those horrible Eurocrats in Brussels.
The whole event almost ground to a halt on Saturday morning with an attempt to adjourn the AGM over a row about proxy voting. Fortunately, Conference Procedures guru Dave Goodwin, who delivered the best speech of the event, was able to restore normal service and those seated on the platform didn’t need to worry about an early check out from the Adelphi Hotel!
The best news was that most people had an enjoyable few days in the self-styled 'real ale pubs capital of the Universe' (sorry, Sheffield-it says so in MerseyAle so it must be right!). Organized trips and crawls showcased local breweries and award-winning local pubs. The Members’ bar was drunk dry, so cider was tasted by those who might have thought they couldn’t. Retiring NE member Bob Stukins reminisced afterwards about the Who (they appeared here in the 1970’s) and our very own Regional Director (who could have reminisced about his beloved Everton but didn’t) celebrated his election to the top table and a comfy chair at the next meeting in Bournemouth.

Branch Chair Welcome

Branch Chair Sonia 1

As Chair of Liverpool and District CAMRA I would like to extend a warm welcome to those CAMRA Members who are visiting Liverpool this weekend to attend the Members Weekend. It is an honour to host this flagship CAMRA event and are looking forward to showing members from all over the country the fantastic array of pubs and breweries this city has to offer. I think it is fair to say we have something for everyone, from ornate architectural establishments to intimate back street boozers, all serving a wide variety of beers from small micros to the well-established national breweries.
A revised edition of our free Liverpool Pub Map has been produced in time for the event and if you have not already received one in your Members pack they can be picked up at the Guild or at various pubs throughout the city.
Myself and other members of the Committee will be at the Meet and Greet in the North Western on Lime Street/ Station Concourse from 4pm until 9pm tonight (Thursday 31st March) to answer any questions you may have; pub maps will also be available. There will be a mini beer festival as well as a Meet the Brewer with Local Brewery Peerless.
On behalf on the local branch I would like to wish you a happy stay in our magnificent city, and hope you enjoy the fantastic array of pubs and local beers we have to offer.

Liverpool Brisk Walkers arrange regular walks within Merseyside and further afield. A good opportunity to get out and about and discover some hidden gems in Liverpool. These may or may not include pubs. Further details on the walks can be found on Liverpool Brisk Walkers Website. Occasionally walks are arranged with Liverpool CAMRA, which will involve visiting a few pubs, and therefore be at a slower pace.
