The judging process for this year’s competition is now complete. All the judges have now submitted their scores and I can now announce a winner.
Firstly, before I do, I would like to give a big thank you to all the judges, nine of them in all, for spending their own free time (and money !) to visit all five pubs on the shortlist TWICE in the space of only six weeks...I hope it wasn’t too onerous a task !
Secondly, the competition was very close this year, particularly between the top two, with under 60 points between them...it sounds a lot, but believe me….it isn’t !
So it gives me great pleasure to announce CASK as this branch’s Pub of the Year (POTY) for 2017 and to congratulate Ian & Michelle for their continued success, following on from winning the same accolade last year. The pub will now go forward into the Merseyside
POTY round against the winners from Wirral, Southport and St Helens.
I would like to also give a special mention to The Grapes (Knight Street), who finished as 1st runner-up but only just ! They will be presented with a Pub of Excellence Award at our Awards Night later this year as will the other pubs on the short-list:
The Frank Hornby
The Lime Kiln
ALL the judges scored CASK as their top pub and comments made included:
“ a very relaxing, homely and welcoming space”
“good selection of beer...frequently something entirely new to try...well for me anyway!”
“very difficult to find a better conditioned pint in Liverpool in my opinion”
“tasters provided upon request AND over-sized glasses!”
“informative beer board and good use of Untapp’d app for beer descriptions”
Subject to confirmation, we will present the POTY shield in CASK to coincide with our May Get-together (17 th May; 8pm start). Details will be posted on the website, social media and in the What’s Brewing newsletter.
