NEXT month’s Get – together is WEDNESDAY 18th OCTOBER and is a walk around the city centre Wetherspoon’s to coincide with their Autumn Beer Festival. If you wish to eat beforehand, we will be meeting at the North Western (Lime Street Station) at 6:30pm, we will then move onto the Richard John Blackler for 7:30, followed by the Fall Well, the Welkin to finish in The Lime Kiln in Concert Square.
Reminder: Champion Beer of Britain (CBoB) nominations
Don’t forget to vote for your favourite local beers. All CAMRA members have the chance to nominate beers by using the CBoB voting website http://www.cbobvoting.org.uk/
Voting closes on Wednesday 1st November 2017 so get cracking!
You can nominate up to five beers in each of the eleven categories to be put forward for the CBoB competition, but if you only want to nominate beers in one category, or even just one beer, that’s fine. The more votes we get, the better the results will be. You do not have to nominate all the beers in one go. You can alter your selections anytime up to the deadline .
The CBoB voting system gives every CAMRA member the opportunity to have a say in who wins and becomes CAMRA’s Champion Beer of Britain, so don’t moan about which beers get judged at GBBF, get involved and vote for your favourites.
Help keep pubs afloat!
CAMRA are urging all members to get involved in the Tax campaign ahead of the Budget. All CAMRA members are being asked to take action to save our pubs from sinking. While it's the publicans and brewers that pay the tax bills, it's ultimately consumers like you who will pay the price as publicans and brewers are forced to put up prices or go bust.
CAMRA are calling for a £5,000 annual business rate relief for all pubs as well as a freeze in beer duty.

The Head of Steam on Hanover Street finally opened to the public on 21st September. The venue, operated by Camerons Brewery of Hartlepool, features an ‘island’ bar and has 7 cask ale lines and 1 for real cider. Currently, there are three from Camerons, two from Leeds Brewery and the remaining are from local brewers such as Neptune, Rock the Boat, Liverpool Organic and Chapter. A discount is available to CAMRA members on production of a valid card.
The previous bar area has been replaced by a series of booths, which will seat up to 6 people comfortably, and feature their own power and USB charging points. The VIP area at the rear has been retained and renamed ‘The Tasting Room’ and is supported by Chimay and features another 2 real ale pumps as well as craft keg fonts.
The Tasting Room will be used to host events. The first event is an evening with Stone Brewing on Tuesday, 5th October at 7pm and will feature beer sampling followed by beer & cheese pairing session from 8pm. This event is free. Then Chimay is hosting a Beer & Cheese Experience on Wednesday, 18th October from 7:30. This event is also free but places need to be booked by emailing the pub as places are limited.

The food offering includes a brunch menu, a range of British pub classics, vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options to offer a varied selection to customers.
Ranelagh’s Tavern have now reduced their handpumps down to 3 as well as ceasing their £2 Ale of the Day offer as previously stated.
Mackenzies has increased their Mon-Thurs price on real ale to £2.50 (£3.50 Fri-Sun). They continue to offer a good selection of beers and are well kept. Titanic Plum Porter often appears and there is usually a local beer available.
Recently David Barker, brewer at Rock the Boat Brewery, spent two days at Stocks Hop farm in Worcestershire. During this time he walked the 100 acres of hop fields where nine varieties of hops are grown (Pilgrim, Target, Phoenix, Goldings, Bramling Cross, Jester, First Gold, Sovereign and Endeavour varieties), and learned how hops are processed for sale to commercial and home brewers.
David harvested some First Gold hops on the Thursday of his visit and brewed with them within 23 hours using a pale malt. The result is First Gold Green Hops Pale Ale (3.9%). Reports say it is a light beer with a subtle hop aroma, – I can verify this as I’ve tried it at Mackenzies. It has also been on sale in the Roscoe Head and the Baltic Fleet, and on its appearance in the Corner Post micro pub on Tuesday 26th September it sold out that evening. It should soon make an appearance in the Volunteer Canteen, The Barbacoa, The Liver and Stamps Too.
